UGM Art gallery in Maribor, SI, international competition, honourable mention, 2010
The plot of New UGM is located in a heart of the city and has an important linkage with historic city and new promenade along Drava river. The plot is well exposed from other side of the river and gives an important impact to city panorama. The terrain inclination of the site towards river Drava is taken as a key importance designing new museum in a historic setting. The volumes of New UGM follow topography fitting into characteristic roof composition of Maribor. We preserve the intimate scale of Maribor and make the museum welcoming and pleasant for everybody.
The new UGM square is planned as a main entrance point to museum and an important part of the public city space. Square opens up towards old part of the city and to embankment of river Drava providing east and south orientation. The new square and the building itself incorporate Street E in open public space avoiding the situation when the street divides the museum plot.
We see the New UGM building as contemporary and attractive cultural centre for every inhabitant and guest of Maribor. the intention is to keep cozy feeling of the city and in the same time to emphasize the social role of the building - to be an urban culture hub. Sloping surface of the square continues into the museum space emphasizing close connection to city public space.
Diversity of exhibition spaces characterizes the new UGM. Inclinated roof structure allows maximum use of North orientated windows to provide natural lighting for exhibition rooms. Overall building structure provides possibility of easy transformation of exhibition spaces.
